HOW TO MAKE OOBLECK FOR SENSORY PLAY

Learn how to make oobleck for sensory play.  Get started with only 2 simple ingredients and create hours of hands-on sensory fun for the little ones!

As part of my ongoing series, ABC Sensory, we’ve been exploring a different sensory activity for each letter of the alphabet.  And for today’s letter Y sensory play, we’ll be making Yellow oobleck!  In this post I’ll show you exactly how easy it is to make.  Plus, I created a FREE checklist to help you make your own ABC sensory bins.  Click the link to get access before getting started: FREE Idea Checklist: How To Create ABC Sensory Bins.

Supplies

Directions

Start by mixing water and a few drops of yellow food coloring in a bowl (we are making yellow oobleck for our Y sensory play, but no food coloring is necessary to make oobleck!)  Next add the cornstarch.  Mix with a spoon or popsicle stick.  If the consistency is too watery, add more cornstarch.  If it’s too thick, add more water.

Once finished, form a ball of oobleck with your hands.  The texture will be unlike anything you’ve ever felt before!  When you squeeze, it’ll feel hard.  But if you let it settle, it seems to melt in your hands.  SO COOL!

Add some letter Y shapes into the oobleck to help reinforce that Y is for Yellow oobleck.

And that’s it!  Let the fun begin!

Make It A Game

Try pushing all the letter Y’s under the oobleck and have the kids try to find them all!

Sneak In Some Learning

As your child is playing, try asking questions like:

“What letter are we learning about today?”

“What sound does the letter Y make?”

“Y is for what?…. Yellow!”
