Directions

Fill your sensory bin with black beans.  Then add the plastic dinosaurs, dinosaur bones, and letter D’s.

Learning note:  When doing this with my kids, I like to include the actual letter D shapes along with the dinosaurs.  I find this helps reinforce the letter we’re learning about.  The more a child sees a letter, the more they’ll come to recognize it.

Make It A Game

Try pushing all the letter D’s and dinosaur bones under the black beans so they’re “hiding.”  Then let your kids dig through the black beans to try and find them all!

Sneak In Some Learning

As your child is playing, try asking questions like:

“What letter are we learning about today?”

“What sound does the letter D make?”

“D is for what?…. Dinosaur Dig!”

When I did this with my kids, they had fun racing each other to see who could find the most bones.  After they found them all, they got to work trying to build the dinosaurs.  The set we used had little pegs and notches in each bone so you could put them together to build mini dinosaur skeletons.  Not all of the bones fit or stayed together, but that didn’t seem to bother my kids.

Overall this dinosaur-themed activity was a big hit with my kids.  And I loved that they were learning at the same time!
